Golden Bears Top Leaderboard After Round 1 as Cal's Aaron Du Ties Tournament Record Score for 18 Holes
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., April 10, 2023 － Scores were low on a near perfect day for the first round of the 76th Western Intercollegiate presented by Titleist at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
University of California’s Aaron Du tied the tournament record as the third player in Western Intercollegiate history to shoot a 7-under-par 63 to sit atop the leaderboard. He finished with six birdies and one eagle. The Golden Bears are in first place on the team leaderboard after shooting a 334 (-16).
They lead the 22nd-ranked Oregon Ducks by one stroke (334) and the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal by four strokes (339).
No. 9 Pepperdine was the final team to come in under par with a 345 (-5).
Individually, Michael Thorbjornsen from Stanford posted the only bogey-free round of the day with a 6-under-par 64.
Greg Solhaug from Oregon also shot a 64 to sit one stroke back.
Oregon’s Owen Avrit sits in fourth alone after a 5-under-par 65, and there are four players tied for fifth place at -4.
