Washington Takes Opening Round Lead At 74th Western Intercollegiate Men’s Golf; Two-Way Tie For Individual Lead

Santa Cruz, Calif. (April 12, 2021) -- Noah Woolsey and Petr Hruby each posted a one-under par 69 leading the University of Washington to the first-round team lead in the 74th Western Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

The Huskies posted an even par score of 350 on the par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. Washington also counted even par 70 scores from Noah Woolsey and Chuan-Tai Lin in the six-player, best five-score team format. Cal is in second place at 353 and Pepperdine is third at 354. Thirteen teams are competing for top honors in the longest running college golf tournament west of the Mississippi River.

“The course is challenging to say the least and is unbelievable condition. It’s always in great condition. It’s the best I’ve seen. We had two one-under par rounds, two even pars and a two-over which is really solid. The guys did a great job of being smart when they got out of position. This course gives you a few birdies. Good shots will be rewarded,” said Washington head coach Alan Murray.

Hawaii’s Justin Ngan and California’s Finigan Tilly share the individual lead at three-under par 67. Ngan was four-under after 14 holes and needed a birdie on the 18th hole for his 67. Tilly birdied the 12th and 13th holes to get to three-under and parred the final five holes to gain a share of the lead with Ngan.

“Everything seemed to be going my way. I had a couple bogeys near the end, but got lucky on 18. I chunked my (tee) shot and it worked out pretty good (for a birdie),” said Ngan, who relied on his putting to carry him to a share of the lead.

Carson Lundell of Brigham Young, San Jose State’s Carl Corpus and Pepperdine’s RJ Manke playing as an individual are tied for third at two-under par 68. Seven players are tied at 69.

Stanford’s Jake Beber-Frankel recorded the first hole-in-one of the 74th Western Intercollegiate using a 52-degree gap wedge on the par 3, 15th hole that played 122 yards.
